my ‘ukulele journey
as the child of a music teacher, I've grown up with a basic hold of music. I learned piano and violin from a young age, and I still kind of play both. in 2023, I also picked up the viola. whew, that alto clef is so weird—I constantly mix up all of them.
in the summer of 2016, I was inspired by Tyler Joseph from the band twenty one pilots to pick up the ‘ukulele. due to personal morals, I no longer listen to twenty one pilots, but i do have to give credit where it's due. Joseph's acoustic versions of top's songs were my introduction to the ‘ukulele world.the first song I ever learned was “the judge” by twenty one pilots. because I am an overachiever who likes challenging myself, I guess.although I created my channel 2012 May 6, I started uploading covers on youtube in 2017. 2017 April 12 I uploaded my first video, a cover of “truce” by twenty one pilots. it was...not good. it's hidden now, but I still can't believe I actually uploaded it; it's so bad.as of 2021 March 2 I have 597 youtube subscribers. it's been a journey, for sure. it's fun (and slightly mortifying) seeing how much progress I've made in my video producing and musical skills.the way I approach video making is still the same, but I've upgraded my equipment as the years have gone by. for more info about this, hit up music.nowadays, I cover the kind of music I listen to, which is indie and jazz/swing. my favorite bands are hippo campus, half•alive, early eyes, brotherkenzie, lupin, mono moon, whistler isaiah, baby boys, hozier, grandson, still woozy, ashe, & glass animals. I have a full list of people I'm tuned into over in tunes.as for my originals? you can find info in music.subscriber count (via socialblade)

frequently asked questions
+ other info

why do you say and spell "ukulele" like that?
this article on the pronunciation and spelling by Brad Bordessa (Live 'Ukulele) explains a lot. here is another article by Kanile'a 'Ukulele about the history of the instrument. and another super helpful article by Leolani Ukulele on how to pronounce 'ukulele.
I want to honor and respect the history of this instrument, and I don't like the Anglicized/colonizer pronunciation.when did you start playing?
the summer of 2016. see about me for more information.
what equipment do you use?
I use an iPhone + RØDE NT-USB+ mic and a 2020 Macbook Air. for a more in-depth answer, check out music.
what's your favorite song to play?
without fail, it's "bambi" by hippo campus. bambi is my favorite song, because I truly vibe with every aspect of it. I've written up the chord sheets to the studio and acoustic versions of this song, which you can take and run with.
do you use tutorials?
if you mean youtube tutorials that walk you through how to play songs, not really, only if the song is super hard. I can pick up things like strum patterns and chord shapes pretty easily. I do look up song tabs off ultimate guitar and write up my own chord sheets, though. when this happens, you’ll find credit in the comments sections of my sheets.
how do I request a tutorial from you?
leave a DM on Discord or a comment on one of my videos. I can do a tutorial on any of the songs I've played before, or anything you think would be in my wheelhouse.
what are alternate tunings?
I'm a big supporter of alternate tunings. most people use a capo, but I prefer to tune the strings themselves. the pros to this include no capo in the way, and the fret positions stay the same. of course, you can't tune the strings too many steps off the standard tuning, or you risk breaking the strings or getting floppy noodles. so! it's good to have a capo still lying around. but a couple steps up or down and I will always prefer tuning the strings.
do you do much fingerpicking?
I'm not very advanced with fingerpicking, and I don't usually play fingerpicking instrumental songs. at the moment, I'm not interested in learning anything advanced, but I do learn a bit of fingerpicking to play hozier songs.
what kind of strumming patterns do you use?
my go-to is a D-x-UDU or D-x-U-x-U strum. basically a modified calypso strum.
how do you do chucking and muting?
people often ask how I chuck and mute, and the answer is...I cannot tell you. it just comes naturally to me. I mean,,,I use the bottom of my palm? if that helps.
